Japanese blood red coral is an extraordinary type of gem. This precious coral, which used to be harvested in the seas of southern Japan, becomes more and more rare every year. Raw coral branches in their original state are now sold for a few hundred dollars per gram. And coral carving craftsmen are disappearing as older craftsmen retire and as the market for their work diminishes.
I happened to obtain a trove of heart-shaped blood red coral cabochons from before the 1980’s, and I had been thinking of the best way to use them. I decided the claddagh ring would be the best solution.
The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish ring which represents love, loyalty, and friendship. “Let Love and Friendship Reign” is the message that this ring conveys. It is said that this type of ring was first produced in the 17th century. Having a blood red heart for the claddagh ring emphasizes its meaning.
I designed this version of the ring specifically for heart-shaped coral cabochons, and thanks to the work of an experienced craftsmen I am able to offer a very expressive and distinctive claddagh ring.
