Carved angel skin coral rose ring with silver thorns
The pink coral used in this ring was harvested around 1960-1980 in Kochi, Japan.
Since then the coral was unsold inventory at an old jewelry studio in Okinawa.
Natural pink color, not dyed.
Carved coral jewelry was popular in Japan until the 1980s.
Carved coral items were mostly made for Obidome (decorations for kimono belts).
But since Japanese coral has now been unavailable for decades, the coral sculptors have also disappeared. It is getting more and more difficult to find carved coral jewelry these days and the prices are rising.
Ring size:US 6.75
Coral rose size:about 10x9xT6 mm
Material of the ring: silver 925
Weight:1.8g
Please keep in mind that most coral are not perfect.
Some might show small holes and cracks.
Japanese coral almost always has a few cracks, small holes that usually don’t stand out.
Most Japanese deep sea coral has cracks, which come from the change in water pressure when the deep sea coral is harvested and pulled to the surface.
However it does not break easily, and it’s no problem for wearing it.
Sometimes you may find black, white, brown, or gray inclusions, which are bits of sand or rock that became embedded in the coral as it grew over hundreds of years.
