Rainbow coral (“sea pine” 海松) is a one type of precious Japanese deep sea coral.
It’s called deep sea pine, and had been used to make Netsuke, Buddhist prayer beads and luxury decorations for Samurai equipment.
Also used for fishing lures because of its rainbow luster.
They grow at depths of about 1000m in the northern ocean and are harvested accidentally by fishermen’s nets or washed by waves to the beach.
I got this piece from a craftsman in Hokkaido (the northern island of Japan) who works with sea pine.
